FACTS & FIGURES

EVERYTHING ABOUT THE BATTLE

  • By order of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery a plan for the Allied advance is adapted to the military situation in the Netherlands in one week’s time. The plan – which was given the code name Operation Market Garden – was divided into two parts.
    • Market: airborne troops were to capture the bridges over the Maas, Waal and Rhine rivers, and other waterways in Brabant and Gelderland.
    • Garden: ground forces were to advance on a narrow front to Arnhem in three days.
  • Operation Market Garden was launched in September 1944, and remains the largest ever airborne landing operation.
